How to Master Spiking a Volleyball - Beginner's Guide
MASTER SPIKING IN BEACH VOLLEYBALL
We all know that beach volleyball requires numerous sets of skills. A key component to the perfect regime is mastering your arm swing mechanics and approach footwork specifically for beach volleyball. Everyone wants to have that sweet volleyball SPIKE!
Are you willing to do the work to obtain it?
We will briefly cover:
1. Arm Swing Mechanics
2. Proper Approach and Timing Footwork
ARM SWING MECHANICS
Everyone wants to bounce balls and score points all while the crowd goes wild. So, how does one do this…By having the proper arm swing mechanics to spike a volleyball.
Setting up for the proper Arm Swing involves a few major points.
The Bow and Arrow Positioning -
For the right handed hitters, you want the left arm reaching high as the right arm goes straight up and pulls back immediately with the elbow along the same line as the shoulder girdle and the arm relaxed in this motion. Don’t leave the left arm dangling by your side. You will miss out on much needed torque through your arm swing. Keep scrolling to find out what the opposite arm should be doing.
Cracking the Whip
What does a whip have to do with volleyball? It’s a metaphor, people. Keep it PG, now. The best way to explain this is by envisioning your body as the whip. Starting with your hips as the handle of the whip and your swinging arm as the end. You, then, use your hip, same side as your swinging arm, to push forward and lengthen your body while jumping. The “cracking” of the whip comes next as you contract your core and “whip” as you follow through the volleyball. For a full breakdown into arm swing mechanics, shoot over to our High Level Arm Swing Mechanics for Spiking a Volleyball blog.
Left (Or Opposite) Arm
What should my left arm be doing? This is where that torque power comes to play. Since you are reaching high as your right arm pulls back, you are gathering power without even realizing. As you go to “crack the whip” and swing through the volleyball, pushing that left arm down towards the ground can assist acceleration through the hitting arm. (For left handed hitters, the opposite would apply.) There are a couple other variations to help with height, reach, and power. We suggest checking out our Complete Player Program where we cover everything from arm swing mechanics to passing a volleyball.
APPROACH FOOTWORK FOR SPIKING
Are you consistently getting to the volleyball too early or too late?
Is your approach footwork and timing in beach volleyball just not quite on point?
Watch this private lesson with JM Plummer as he explains and instructs his student athlete in the proper approach and arm swing mechanics for beach volleyball.
Beach Volleyball Approach Footwork and Timing
In women’s beach volleyball and men’s beach volleyball, approach footwork for spiking and timing are essential. You want to make sure that you are taking a slow first step that leads into a slightly faster, larger second step and then really getting a nice aggressive last two steps while reaching quickly into the bow-and-arrow position for hitting a volleyball.
Using a four step approach will produce better results with consistency.
THE FOUR STEPS ARE:
The Timing Step (First Step)
This is the slowest step and happens right when the setter is touching the ball. This step will help set up your rhythm based on what set is produced.
The Momentum and Directional Step (Second Step)
This step is slightly faster than the first step which leads you into your fastest step of the step close.
This is used to get your feet to the ball. Beach volleyball can have unpredictable elements such as wind. This step helps you adjust if the ball gets pushed by the wind or if the set goes outside of the the intended call.
The Step Close (Third and Fourth Step)
This step in beach volleyball footwork should be close to the directional step as it will transfer all the forward momentum into the ground and give you the ability to jump straight up.
